द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंग · The final shrine

Where the Jyotirlinga Yatra is fulfilled

Presiding deities: Lord Shiva as Grishneshwar (Ghushmeshwar) — a Swayambhu (self-manifested) linga, worshipped with Goddess Parvati in her form as Kusuma.

ॐ नमः शिवाय घृष्णेश्वराय

Grishneshwar — also called Ghrishneshwar or Ghushmeshwar — is the twelfth and final Jyotirlinga, and completing darshan here is regarded as the culmination of the Dwadash Jyotirlinga Yatra. According to the Shiva Purana, a devout woman named Kusuma (Ghushma) worshipped Shiva by making and immersing clay lingas in a nearby lake each day. When her jealous co-wife killed Kusuma’s son and cast the body into that lake, Kusuma’s faith in Shiva never wavered. Moved by her devotion and forgiveness, Lord Shiva restored her son to life and established himself here forever as Ghushmeshwar — the Lord of Ghushma. The shrine is thus revered above all as a tirtha of devotion, patience and forgiveness.

History & heritage

A jewel rebuilt by Ahilyabai, beside Ellora

The present temple is a compact but exquisitely detailed red-sandstone shrine, rebuilt in the 18th century by the great Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore — the same devout ruler who rebuilt Kashi Vishwanath at Varanasi and many other shrines across India. Its five-tier shikhara and richly carved walls depict scenes from the Puranas, dashavatara figures and graceful sculpture in the Hemadpanthi-influenced style. The site itself is far older, with earlier patronage attributed to the Rashtrakuta and Yadava dynasties whose artisans also carved the neighbouring Ellora caves.

The original ancient temple is believed to have been damaged during Malik Kafur’s invasion in the 14th century, before its 18th-century revival. Grishneshwar’s greatest distinction is its setting: barely a kilometre away stand the Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of 34 Hindu, Buddhist and Jain rock-cut temples, crowned by the Kailasa temple (Cave 16) — the world’s largest monolithic excavation, carved top-down from a single basalt cliff. This makes Grishneshwar a rare pilgrimage-cum-heritage destination, often visited together with Daulatabad Fort, Bhadra Maruti and the murals of Ajanta.

Frequently asked questions

What are the darshan and aarti timings at Grishneshwar?
Mangala Aarti is at 5:30 AM. Morning darshan runs 5:30 AM to 12:00 PM, evening darshan 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, and the Shayan Aarti is at 9:30 PM. Timings change on festival days. If you are also visiting the Ellora Caves, note they are closed on Tuesdays.
Why is Grishneshwar special, and is it really the last Jyotirlinga?
Yes. Grishneshwar is the twelfth and final Jyotirlinga, and completing darshan here marks the culmination of the Dwadash Jyotirlinga Yatra. Many pilgrims who have visited the other eleven come here last, to complete their pilgrimage with great emotion. Its setting beside the UNESCO Ellora Caves makes it a unique pilgrimage-and-heritage destination.
Is there a dress code at the temple?
Modest traditional attire is recommended — dhoti-kurta or trousers and shirt for men, saree, salwar-kameez or churidar for women. At some times men may be asked to remove the upper garment before entering the sanctum, as at several Maharashtra Shiva temples. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed, footwear is removed, and photography is prohibited inside the sanctum.
How do I reach Grishneshwar and combine it with Ellora?
Grishneshwar is in Verul, about 30 km from Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar), which has both an airport and a railway station. The Ellora Caves are barely 1 km from the temple, so most pilgrims do darshan and the caves on the same day (caves closed Tuesdays). We arrange transfers and a combined heritage circuit with Daulatabad Fort and, if time allows, Ajanta.
Can DharmikVibes help senior citizens and NRI families?
Yes. We arrange gentle pacing, a coordinator throughout, accessible routes at the temple, verified hygienic stays, priest help for darshan and a yatra-completion puja, and timezone-friendly planning for NRI families. Just message us on WhatsApp at +91 92203 52244 with your dates.
